Packing for 1942

My son Daxx...

This picture was taken at church (on a casual Wednesday night) 2 weeks ago.   Notice his tie, his vest, his watch, his hat... all meticulously picked out.

When his imagination takes over, buckle up because you never know where you're going to end up.  And his sister... she just plays along.  She does what he tells her, wears what he puts on her, and is his sidekick til the end.

Below:  Here they are going camping.  Notice the mess that ensues when he starts "PACKING".  I finally had to create a rule that he cannot "pack" any real clothing because he was emptying his entire wardrobe into 12 different bags, purses and suitcases he had scrounged up around the house.

Below: Go big or Go home when you dress up around our house.  He puts on these elaborate outfits then he can't play because his "costume" keeps falling, slipping, or crumbling causing him to spin into a full blown anxiety attack. So. I have washed my hands of it.   If he choses to get complicated with things, he has to figure them out HIMSELF

I much prefer his simpler identities, like Clark Kent (pictured below)

This conversation happened yesterday:

Daxx: "Mom, if you don't help me sort these Lego's I am going to get a grip and pack 2 bags and leave after dinner tonight."

Me: "Cool, can I help you pack?"

Daxx: "Here... hmmm... okay... let's think of another plan"

(1 hour later)

Daxx: "Mom, can we pack now?" He has wheeled his suitcase into the living room and has a pile consisting of every pair of sock and underwear he has sitting next to him.  He plops down and begins working.

Me: "Daxx, where are you going?"

Daxx: "Back to 1942"

Me: "Daxx, do you know it is impossible to go back in time?"

Daxx: He pauses his packing and his eyes shoot up at me as if he were saying, "How dare you say something so absurd".

Me: "Who are you going to 1942 with?"

Daxx: "Dad."

Me: "Why can't I go?"

Daxx: "Because you don't believe in 1942, and we are taking red suitcases.  You don't have a red suitcase.  Don't worry mom, I am moving out when I am nine anyways."

Me: "Really?"

Daxx: "Yea.  You're going to have to live with that reality, Mom."  (I can't make this stuff up people)

Me: "Okay, I guess I will just have to live with it."

If any child will be capable of creating a time machine for the sole purpose of proving me wrong, it would be my oldest child.

Then 30 minutes later be brings me this picture.

(I drew the people and the stars and the suitcases)

It is Daxx and his Dad with their suitcases going back to 1942.   He is serious about this trip... I will keep you posted on his progress.

  5. I read this yesterday, but didn't have a chance to comment. I was laughing out loud. I mean, really. You HAVE to put this in his baby book or some kind of book that he can read later. What a vivid imagination he has. My favorite it when he said you couldn't go back because "You don't believe in 1942." Oh Heather, where does he come up with this?? I love it.

    XOXO,
    Meredith
